Azzad Mutual Funds

Besides investing in the portfolios of the Ethical Wrap Program, you may choose to invest in the Azzad mutual funds. As with all our investment products, the mutual funds follow our ethical investment philosophy. Please make sure you read the fund's prospectus carefully before investing.

Stocks in the Azzad funds' portfolios typically have "high earnings yield" or high earnings relative to the value of the companies. For example, a company that has a valuation of $1 billion and generates $100 million in earnings has an earnings yield of 10%. The higher the earnings yield, the better.

Mr. Jamal Elbarmil serves as the Vice President of Azzad Asset Management and as portfolio manager for the Azzad Funds. He is responsible for the day to day management of the Azzad Funds’ portfolios aided by a team of equity analysts. He holds a Masters Degree in Information Systems from the American University in Washington DC and he is a PhD candidate at George Mason University in Virginia. The Funds invests at least 80% of its assets in dividend paying companies. In selecting securities, the Fund’s portfolio manager looks for companies that have a history of consistent dividends and earnings. The Fund will invest primarily in the common stocks of large-capitalization companies, but may invest up to 25% of its assets in the common stocks of mid or small capitalization companies (mid capitalization companies are companies with a market capitalization of $500 million to $10 billion, small capitalization companies are companies with a market capitalization of less than $1 billion). The Fund is diversified, and with respect to 75% of its total assets, it does not invest more than 5% of total assets in the securities of any one issuer. In addition, the Fund will not invest more than 25% of its assets in any particular industry. The Fund may also invest in stocks of foreign companies including American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). The Azzad Ethical Mid Cap Fund invests in small, mid and large companies. The fund chooses its investments from the ethically-screened list of securities. The fund manager then ranks the remaining companies based on earnings yield and return on capital (making accounting adjustments to correct for distortions such as goodwill, off balance sheet items, etc.).
The manager then conducts more extensive analysis of the top 15% - 20% of securities in the ranking. More extensive analysis involves examining balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements and approximating the value of the company using a Dividend Discount Model, a cash flow model or a comparables model.
If a firm is fundamentally strong (strong balance sheet, cash flows and margins) and trades at or below its industry peers, the stock is placed on our watch list for purchase. Purchases are executed at opportune times. On average, the Azzad Ethical Mid Cap Fund holds 40-50 stocks with average weightings of 2%. The Azzad Ethical Mid Cap Fund uses the S&P 500 Index as its benchmark.
